How to Spread Bet on Oracle? |
If an investor decides to invest in firms like Oracle then one option could be to spread bet on the Oracle share price.
Looking at Capitalspreads, you can see that they are currently offering the Oracle Rolling Daily market at $35.14 - $35.19. Therefore, an investor can spread trade on the Oracle share price:
Rising above $35.19, or
Falling below $35.14
Whilst making a spread bet on US equities you trade in £x per cent. As a result, if you decided to invest £4 per cent and the Oracle share price changes by $0.33 then that would change your bottom line by £132. £4 per cent x $0.33 = £132.
Note that you are also able to trade this market in Euros or Dollars, e.g. $x per cent.
Rolling Daily Shares Markets
This is a Rolling Daily Market which means that there is no predetermined settlement date for this market. You do not have to close your trade, should it still be open at the end of the trading day, it simply rolls over to the next trading day.
Should your trade roll over, if you are speculating that the market will:
Increase - then you are charged a small overnight financing fee, or
Decrease - then you will usually receive a small credit to your account
You can find more on Rolling Daily Markets, as well as a fully worked example, in our feature Rolling Daily Spread Betting.
Oracle Rolling Daily - US Shares Trading Example |
If you consider the above spread of $35.14 - $35.19 and make the assumptions that:
- You've analysed the markets, and
- Your research suggests that the Oracle shares look like they will increase and go above $35.19
Then you may decide that you want to buy at $35.19 and invest, let’s say, £3 per cent.
So, you make a profit of £3 for every cent that the Oracle shares increase and move higher than $35.19. Having said that, it also means that you will lose £3 for every cent that the Oracle market moves below $35.19.
Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.
As a result, if after a few trading sessions the share price moved higher then you could consider closing your position in order to secure your profit.
So if the market increased then the spread might change to $35.59 - $35.64. In order to close your spread bet you would sell at $35.59. Accordingly, with the same £3 stake you would make:
P&L = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
P&L = ($35.59 - $35.19) x £3 per cent stake
P&L = $0.40 x £3 per cent stake
P&L = 40¢ x £3 per cent stake
P&L = £120 profit
Speculating on shares, whether by spread betting or otherwise, can work against you. With this example, you wanted the share price to increase. Naturally, the share price might go down.
If the Oracle shares began to drop then you might choose to close your spread bet to limit your losses.
Should the market fall back to $34.84 - $34.89 then this means you would sell back your position at $34.84. Accordingly, your loss would be:
P&L = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
P&L = ($34.84 - $35.19) x £3 per cent stake
P&L = -$0.35 x £3 per cent stake
P&L = -35¢ x £3 per cent stake
P&L = -£105 loss
Note - Oracle Rolling Daily spread betting price quoted as of 06-Feb-13.
